âWhat took you so long?â my sister Shelly yells from the kitchen as Maya and I walk through the door. âThe kids are starving!â
Shelly walks out of the kitchen and stops when she sees Maya. âHi!â she says. âI didnât realize Troy was bringing a friend.â
âNeither did we,â Maya says. âHi, Iâm Maya. I made the tart. Troy was the unfortunate recipient of my emotional meltdown when he stopped to pick it up.â
Shellyâs face lights up. Sheâs almost as bad as Mom.
âIâm his sister Shelly,â she says, extending a hand. âDid you really make this beautiful tart?â
Mayaâs cheeks flush. âI did.â
âBut her real speciality is cakes,â I add.
Shelly looks at me with undisguised glee. âWell, weâll have to get one of those next time.â
âUncle Troy!â My niece and nephew fling themselves against me, each wrapping around one of my legs. âYouâre here!â
âAnd you brought a pretty girl!â says Marie, whoâs five and prone to saying whatever pops into her head.
âMaya, this is Marie and her little brother Jamie.â
âHi!â says four-year-old Jamie. âDo you like Legos?â
âI love Legos,â Maya says, crouching down to Jamieâs eye level. âDo you?â
âYeah!â Jamie says, clearly impressed with Mayaâs conversational skills.
âWhy are we all hanging out in the foyer?â my mother asks, coming out of the kitchen. âOh!â she says, her eyes widening as she sees Maya. âHello, dear. Iâm Carla Ingraham.â
âMaya Hernandez.â
âAre you related to Cristina Hernandez, by chance?â
âGood guess,â Maya says with a smile.
âYour aunt might have told me about you when I called to order the tart,â Mom says.
Leave it to my mother to get someoneâs entire life story when sheâs placing an order.
âYouâre very welcome here, Maya, but Iâm bursting with curiosity about how it happened.â
Maya looks at me.
âShe was having a bad night,â I explain, âand I know itâs nearly impossible to have a bad time at an Ingraham dinner. So I invited her. Iâm sorry, I should have texted you.â
âNot at all, dear,â Mom says. Her tone clearly tells me Iâm dismissed as she shifts her attention to Maya and slides an arm around her shoulder. âI hope you like eggplant parmesan,â Mom says. âWeâre almost ready to eat.â
